Pride 2014 –  Bristol Pride Cabaret Stage

As a result of a conversation last September between myself, Jeff Sutton, President of the then Bristol Public services branch and Aled Osborne aka Miss Beaver, organiser of Bristol Pride Cabaret stage that the GMB became the main sponsor of the Cabaret stage. “It was clear” Aled said “that if the GMB hadn’t been involved there may well have been no cabaret Stage in 2014.” With agreement from the executive and ratified at a later Branch meeting, Bristol Public Services pledged £1750 and the Regional executive agreed to donate £1250 and the Cabaret stage, thanks to the GMB was secured for 2014. Daryn Carter Director of Pride said ‘it’s support like this that means we can keep Bristol Pride free.’ As for the day itself it was a success in every way. The weather was great, people turned out in their tens of thousands and the event itself was a resounding success. The Cabaret stage was festooned with GMB flags, bunting, and banners. GMB balloons were in great demand by young and old and hundreds were given away. The GMB’s involvement was continually mentioned and applauded by both the acts and the crowd. Chart topping Australian singer, no not Kylie but Kelly Wild went out of her way to thank the GMB. The GMB’s support for Bristol pride undoubtedly raised the GMB’s profile as a community and fully inclusive Union. A thought that will stay in the minds of all those who attended for a long, long time to come. What now? The branches’ executive is making plans to support next year’s event and to keep the GMB at the forefront Bristol Pride. Thanks to Wendy Weston, Sharon Hallett and Paul staff for their work on the day and to Ruth Bennett, Julia Brady, Ken Baker (and ask Ruth B for other names). See you all next year. Jeff
